On fire with the love of God

204. .  (Also in VII.xxxix.3, attributed to Poemen)  A certain old man said, “A fly will not go near a pot when it is on the fire, but once it has cooled the fly will alight on it and produce maggots. Likewise the demons flee from the monk on fire with the love of God, but if he cools down they buzz into him and lead him astray.”

(De Vitis Patrum Book III, Text #204)
